Exhibition : Can luxury be a sin

Luxury is necessary. Luxury brings progress, and
it exists everywhere in al layers of the society.
Whether or not you agree with the above bold statements,
this exhibition may teach you a lot about yourself
more than any other scripophily exhibition before.

What is luxury?
Kann denn Luxus Sünde sein - Can luxury be a sin, the new temporary exhibition from Wertpapierwelt, examines various aspects of this age-old question. On display are not only objects that can be assigned to individual aspects of luxury but also about 50 shares and bonds of companies that "produced" luxury. The exposition investigates the complexity of the subject along with all its social and economic facets. Dagmar Schönig, curator of Wertpapierwelt, clarifies Visitors will find out what different emotions that the mere word luxury evokes in each and every one of us .

For the video the museum adapted the song's lyrics and

Two tips for visitors with extra time:
1. Can luxury be a sin is actually a part of a threefold exhibition. These are the two permanent sections :
    • Shares & Co - How financial instruments work, displays the multifaceted nature of financial instruments and their workings.
    • The Story of capitalism – How shares changed the world is devoted to the origin and spread of the joint stock company throughout the last 400 years.
2. A fictitious trading workplace has been setup with two PCs having access to the collection's database. The database contains both the fronts and backs of all the approximate 10,000 securities in the collection.

Annuaire Desfossés
In 1907, E. Desfossés & Fabre Frères, Paris, started publishing a yearly directory, the Annuaire Desfossés. These manuals describe local and international securities, issued by governments, municipalities and companies, and traded on the French interbank market. Information included with the entries :  nationality, date of establishment, object, registered office, duration, social capital, detail of the distribution of profits, names of directors, highest and lowest quotations, authorized amount, issue amount, nominal value, interest coupon due, and much more.

From 1912 the editor included also the values traded on the official stock market. Twenty years later, in 1932, regional securities from the provincial exchanges, over-the-counter and a large number of colonial values were added to the directory. Following an agreement between the Société Anonyme Cote Desfossés and the Société d’Éditions Économiques et Financières (SEF), a single directory is published annually, from 1950 until 1981, under the name Desfossés-SEF. It consists of two volumes. The first includes a section on loans and information related to corporate law. The second includes records on companies. Source : Centre des Archives Économiques et Financières (CAEF)

The first four editions of the directory have been digitized by Gallica, the digital library of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France. You can query and download the books for the years 1907, 1908, 1909 and 1910, right here . Once on the page, open up a book from the list by clicking its title. When the book opens up in your browser, you'll find a link to download (in French: Téléchargement). Accepting the usage conditions, click "Envoyer" (send) after which a PDF file is being prepared for you. The files can be easily searched for keywords in French, e.g. "Mexique" or "mine d'or".
